Blown wood pellet delivery is one of the easiest ways to keep your heating running, especially when you want clean storage and fewer bags to handle. Most deliveries are straightforward. When problems happen, it is usually down to access, distance to the fill point, or store setup.
At SDL Pellets, we deliver blown wood pellets across the UK, and we have seen every type of site. This guide covers the common blown delivery issues and the simple steps that prevent them.

1) Problem: The lorry is bigger than you expect
Blown delivery vehicles are large, which matters on narrow UK lanes and tight entrances. Despite us having a fleet of smaller 8 wheelers, these are still roughly the size of an average bin lorry.
Common issues:
- Narrow roads and single-track access
- Tight turns and limited turning circles
- Low branches and overhanging hedges
- Soft verges and steep slopes in wet weather
- Parked cars part blocking the entrance or turning space
How to avoid it:
- Tell us at booking if access is narrow, steep, or awkward
- Share photos of the entrance and turning area if you can
- Mention any restrictions, gates, or time windows we need to abide by
- Let us know the safest place for the lorry to stop
2) Problem: The fill point is too far away (not enough pipe)
If the lorry cannot stop close enough to your store, the pipe run may be longer than expected. This is usually not an issue, however, we do need to know so we can pack the correct amount of piping on the lorry. Beyond this, the longer the distance the pellets have to travel, the higher the amount of degradation that will occur. The overall takeaway is that we need the setup to be both safe, and workable.
How to avoid it:
- Measure the distance from the stopping point to the fill point accurately
- Tell us if the distance is long or unusual
- Clear a safe route to the fill point so the driver is not fighting through brambles or clutter
3) Problem: The fill point area is blocked or difficult to access
The driver must be able to attach pipes securely. If the connection is behind fencing, up steps, or in a tight corner, it becomes unsafe. We will always try to be accomodating but our drivers need to be safe and confident that the attachment points are fully secure.
How to avoid it:
- Clear the area around the fill point
- Ensure fittings are accessible without climbing or stretching
- Make sure the driver can work securely while connecting the hose and fittings
4) Problem: Unsafe or makeshift connection setups
This is one of the easiest problems to prevent, and one of the most common issues our drivers see.
Please do not use drain guttering or similar makeshift piping. It can break or cause static issues, making delivery impossible and causing a large mess. Additionally, the risk of injury during a delivery is something we will not expose our drivers to, especially when it is easily avoidable. Pellet piping is specially designed to be durable, but also to protect your pellets, which in turn, minimises dust and will save you a fortune in maintenance issues.
If you are unsure whether your connection setup is suitable, ask us before delivery.
5) Problem: The pellet store is already too full
Stores can be misleading. Pellets do not always sit evenly and store gauges are not always perfect.
How to avoid it:
- Leave sensible free space before ordering, try to visually check the whole pellet level and not just the viewing window
- If you are not sure on capacity, order a smaller top-up rather than filling to the brim
- Tell us if you have had bridging or feed issues before (we may need to tweak the angle of insertion)
6) Problem: Dust and fines build up over time
All pellet handling involves fines. Over time, dust can build up in stores and feed systems, especially if the store is not cleaned occasionally.
How to reduce issues:
- Keep your store dry, sealed, and well-maintained
- Minimises the distance from the fill point to the silo so that less piping is needed. Additionally, avoid bends or angles.
- If your system is sensitive, plan an occasional full empty and clean as well as regular maintenance
- Tell us if you have had blockages before so we can add notes to the delivery
7) If something goes wrong on site, tell us quickly
Large vehicles and tight sites can sometimes mean minor mishaps, such as soft verges giving way or low branches being clipped.
If anything happens, whether its damage, a driver issue or a pellet concern, contact us straight away. We are human, and we will always aim to sort things quickly and fairly.
